Judicial Clerks
Your experience sets you apart. At Proskauer, judicial clerks find an opportunity to work with the world’s top businesses, sports leagues, financial institutions, investment funds, not-for-profit institutions, governmental entities, and other organizations and individual clients in their most important deals and matters. Our cases are significant, cutting-edge, and intellectually challenging.
What sets Proskauer apart is a powerful combination of extensive trial experience, an innovative approach to client service, a prestigious and broad group of clients, and partners who believe in open doors and open communication.
Setting Precedent. The restructuring of Puerto Rico is likely the most active litigation in the US today and involves every aspect of civil society from the provision of electricity and sewerage to pensions for public employees to maintaining the highways and transportation systems. Receiving dozens of filings a day for over two years, from an army of Amlaw100 opposing counsel, Proskauer has scored an extraordinary number of victories for our client the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico, defeating injunctions, dismissing complaints, and winning appeals. Litigating new law involving complex social, business, and constitutional issues, we are establishing precedent and creating the blueprint for solving future municipal and territorial financial crises. Even more critically, we are assisting our client in establishing a better and more hopeful future for the three and half million residents of Puerto Rico.
Bet the Company Cases. Proskauer successfully defended Johnson & Johnson in a series of widely-publicized jury trials, including securing several victories in cases involving its Baby Powder product.
#MeToo. The #MeToo movement has rocked institutions to their core. Proskauer has earned a formidable reputation for its robust investigations. Clients include the Metropolitan Opera, where we investigated allegations of misconduct against musical director emeritus James Levine, and the New York City Ballet, where we advised the Ballet and its Board in the face of allegations of abusive behavior by renowned former ballet master-in-chief Peter Martins and sexual misconduct by male dancers. We are not only involved in high-profile litigation, but also creating change with a taskforce dedicated to working with companies and their Boards to improve workplace culture going forward.
A Sports Powerhouse. Proskauer regularly represents the leading sports organizations, including the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, MLS, ATP, WTA, the collegiate “Power 5 Conferences,” the Big East, and numerous teams and industry players. For one recent example, we represented the so-called “Power 5 Conferences” (Pac 12, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, and SEC) in the 10-day bench trial of a high-profile class action brought by current and former NCAA Division I football and basketball players challenging the limits on compensation and benefits for student-athletes. Plaintiffs sought an order removing existing limitations — an order that would effectively have ended amateurism in college sports.
Cutting-Edge Appeals. Proskauer’s appellate team regularly handles critical matters involving a wide array of issues and industries before courts of appeals across the country, including the U.S. Supreme Court. We have been named an “Appellate Group of the Year” by Law360, and our appellate representations have earned “Litigator of the Week” recognition for their advocates. Over just the past year, we have handled major appeals on behalf of the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico, numerous sports leagues and teams, large multinational corporations, criminal defendants, among others. Our appeals are staffed leanly and associates are given the opportunity to research, write, and formulate strategy from day one.
We provide associates with an amazing platform to develop. Associates work directly with clients, conduct depositions, argue motions, and examine witnesses at trial. We frequently go to court and our associates are often on the front lines, taking a witness or arguing an appeal.
Vault says about Proskauer: “This high-power firm has charged ahead full-throttle without sacrificing its informal culture.” What makes a law firm truly great, however, is the people, and we are a team filled with talented, accomplished, and friendly people.
An Experienced Team. In addition to the many former judicial clerks who have chosen to make Proskauer their professional home—including three U.S. Supreme Court clerks—our litigators and alumni have served as:
Public Service. We are profoundly dedicated to public service. Proskauer has a robust pro bono program, with a major emphasis on providing legal services to the disadvantaged. Our commitment is manifested in the structure of the Firm’s procedures for handling pro bono matters, as well as in the scope and diversity of our pro bono docket. Our extensive pro bono work includes large and small matters for individual clients and not-for-profit organizations—cases we have taken all the way to the Supreme Court.
