Jake Butwin is an associate in the Litigation Department and a member of the firm’s Sports Law Group. He represents clients across a wide range of industries and is experienced in all stages of litigation, from pre-litigation counseling through trial and appeal.
Jake devotes a substantial portion of his practice to representing and advising sports leagues, teams, and other clients active in the sports business. He has been a member of litigation and trial teams in numerous sports-related matters across the country, including, most recently, in Major League Soccer’s successful defense of an antitrust suit brought by the North American Soccer League. Following a three-week trial, a 10-member jury delivered a complete defense verdict after only 90 minutes of deliberations. Jake also serves as Secretary of the Litigation Subcommittee of the New York City Bar Association’s Sports Law Committee.
Jake also has significant experience representing clients across the private capital landscape. He has advised and litigated on behalf of private credit, private equity, and other asset management firms in matters involving complex financing arrangements and distressed investments, as well as other issues that arise in private capital disputes.
Jake earned his J.D. from Fordham University School of Law and his B.A., magna cum laude, from Duke University, where he was a captain of the men’s varsity soccer team. Before law school, Jake worked for a major investment bank.
