WASHINGTON, D.C., April 4, 2023 – Leading international law firm Proskauer is pleased to welcome John Mahon as a partner in its Investment Management practice, where he will bolster the Firm’s registered funds and business development company (BDC) capabilities. John is the third partner to join Proskauer’s Investment Management practice in as many months. The Firm previously welcomed Registered Funds partner William MacGregor and Private Funds partner Ash Ilkhani.
John brings nearly 20 years of experience working with asset management clients in structuring, launching and managing regulated fund products and other permanent capital vehicles. He will be based in the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office.
“I am excited to welcome John to Proskauer. His skill set directly complements the work of our asset management focused groups,” said Chip Parsons, co-chair of the Corporate Department and partner in the Private Funds Group at Proskauer. “Clients rely on our expertise when exploring alternative registered fund and BDC solutions for accessing capital and will greatly benefit from his experience and knowledge.”
John represents private equity firms, credit managers and other financial sector participants in a wide range of fund formation, capital markets and securities law matters, including both public and private offerings of BDCs and other alternative vehicles, such as registered closed-end funds and interval funds. He also has extensive experience advising asset managers on the unique regulatory complexities involved in launching and managing registered funds and BDCs, including as part of larger platforms, and has sought and obtained SEC exemptive relief on behalf of numerous clients.
“As we continue to see leading asset managers create non-traded BDCs and other alternative vehicles, John’s track record in this sector will be invaluable. He is a great addition as we continue to support clients in driving their businesses forward,” said Steven M. Ellis, Chairman of Proskauer.
“Proskauer is advising on so many of the matters shaping the investment management industry today. I’m excited to join and to work with their cross-disciplinary team to help clients achieve their goals,” said John.
John joins from Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP and prior to his career in private practice, John worked in the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Corporation Finance. John is also a former chair of the Corporate Finance Committee of the Corporation, Finance and Securities Law Section of the District of Columbia Bar and has served as an adjunct professor at the George Washington University Law School since 2009, and at the Georgetown University Law Center since 2023. He received his B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Richmond and his J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center.
